what subsection are h+z apart of ?
imprisonment
what are the other studies in this subsection?
gillis and nerfekh
Dooley
haney and zimbardo
what are the two conflicting points of view ?
prisons should act as a deterrent
humane prisons are a sign of cultured society(rehabilitation)
what did zimbardo hope to achieve ?
lead to an improvement in the American treatment of prisoners (they are tougher than UK prisons e.g. still have death penalty)
what did h and z look into?
the past and future of prison policy in the USA
what are some changes that have occurred within the prison system within the last 25 years?
Ronald regans ‘war on drugs’ led to put more criminal behind bars
the concept of rehabilitation was a nono was very frowned upon and criminals deserved the punishment
rigid sentencing e.g. no early release for good behaviour
more prisons (2 million population)
racist bias in prisons 48% of pop was black, although reprented 6% of general pop (America still racist)
introduction of supermax prison
what did haney and zimardo argue prisons don’t do?
consider the individual and usa is racist , they will just believe its their personality and not the environmental factors
what are some of the suggestions for improvements ?
prisons should be used as a last resort due to them being psychologically damaging
prisons should take into account individual differences to avoid damage (it maybe worse for others )
rehabilitation programmes should be used ( help them cope once they leave to reduce recividsim rates)
prisoner assessments should include situational factors , behaviour should be seen in context of situation (why they turned to crime)
psychological knowledge should be used to improve the conditions within prison
