what happens in the first stage of cognitive preparation ?
encouraged to analyse their own patterns of anger , e.g. situations that trigger anger
they learn their danger situations
then therapist able to rationalise thoughts , by tracing individuals pattern of behaviour , to then break the violent response by the consequences e.g. bans , guilt charges etc
so goal is to change the way the individuals think about danger situations and change their response (the pattern)
what occurs in the second stage of anger reduction ?
skill acquisition - allows individuals to learn a range of new skills that can allow them to deal with the ‘danger situation’
cognitive- challenges the thought process, that are irrational yet well rehearsed (might include telling themselves to stop when thought patterns emerge) rather than relying on previous maladaptive responses.
behavioural- includes relaxation, communication skills and problem-solving skills , relaxation helps to control emotions and relax
what can assertiveness training be useful for ?
to achieve an objective like getting a point across without resorting to violence as people can confuse assertiveness with aggression
what is stage 3 ?
application practice- practice skills in control condition , through role-play be exposed to previous situations in the past and then would increase in difficulty then apply this to everyday situations
what are the problems with anger management?
time consuming
only work is sufficient resources are available
the effects don’t work long-term
doesn’t have the same effect for everyone
why is this useful?
helps individuals to change and establish their behaviour patterns
reduces aggression in a offender population
uses a variety of techniques
what is the aims of national anger management package ?
increase their understanding of how and why they become angry
realise the importance of monitoring own behaviour so they notice the first signs of becoming angry
develop strategies for controlling their behaviour
use role play to cope with provocation
consider how their lives will improve if they learn to control anger and aggression

to attempt to evaluate its effectiveness objectively, comparing the aggression levels before and after treatment
