Organic Molecules Flashcards
What are monosaccharides?
The simplest carbohydrates e.g. glucose. They easily transport in the blood and are the main source of energy for cells.
What are polysaccharides?
They are formed from many monosaccharide molecules eg. starch and glycogen. They are made of many thousands of glucose molecules and are insoluble
What is the process called when individual segments join up to make chains?
Condensation
What is the process called when chains split up to make individual segments?
Hydrolysis
How are lipids formed?
Lipids are formed by the condensation of three molecules of fatty acid with one molecule of glycerol.
What are proteins?
Proteins are made up of long chains of sub units called amino acids, joined together in particular sequences which are coded for by genes.
