Connecting To The Internet Flashcards

1
Q

What’s the main difference between analogue and digital signals?

A

The difference between analogue and digital signals is that analoge signals can take any value within a range whereas digital signals can only be on or off.
This makes a digital wave jump up in steps, whereas an analoge wave changes gradually.

Q

What are the advantages and disadvantages of analogue signals?

A

Analog signals are good for measuring physical quantity is as they change gradually, however analogue signals are more prone to interference and take up more bandwidth than digital signals.

Q

What are the advantages of digital signals?

A

Digital signals are more reliable as they do not suffer from interference as much as analog signals. Digital signals can carry much more information offering data Internet speed, more TV channels and more interactive opportunities through the TV.

Q

What is a modem?

A

A modem is a device which is connected between a computer and a phone line or cable connection. A modem is an analogue to digital converter as well as a Digital to analogue converter, it converts signals both ways

Q

When would you need a wireless router instead of a modem?

A

If signals are sent to your home as digital signals (a more expensive service), then a modem is not required at is and is replaced with a wireless router.

Q

Why are broadband dongles good?

A

They are convenient for when travelling, and they are very versatile as they can’t be moved quickly between one device and another as they will work in any device that has a USB connection

16
Q

What does asymmetric mean in a connection?

A

It means that the upload speed is less than the download speed.

17
Q

With ADSL can you remain connected to the Internet when you receive a telephone call?

A

Yes

18
Q

How does cable broadband carry signals?

A

Cable broadband uses fibre-optic cables, these cables carry digital signals in the form of pulses of light passing along the cable.

19
Q

What is a router?

A

A router is a device that is attached to a modem. A router allows other computers to get Internet access by connecting to it with a ethernet cable.

20
Q

What is a wireless router?

A

A wireless router also attaches to a modem. It sends out a wireless signal throughout the house or building.

21
Q

What will happen to the bandwidth if multiple people are online with the same router?

A

The bandwidth will be shared amongst them, so if 4 people are sharing a 2Mb per second connection, they will only experienced the Internet at 0.5 Mb per second
