Fungi Flashcards
What are the cell walls of fungal cells made out of?
A mixture of substances including chitin.
What is saprotrophic nutrition?
It is how Fungi feed, and otherwise known as ‘dead feeding’.
How did fundi reproduce?
They reproduce by the production of spores. The fungi keeps the spores enclosed in a sporangium, but when it bursts open, the spores are dispersed and can land on the food source. Then it can germinate and a new mycelium can develop.
What is the mycelium?
It is made up of branching hyphae, and penetrates throughout the food source. The food may be the remains of an animal or plant.
What are the requirements of fungi?
And moist environment, a warm environment, a nutrient source. (Fungi do not require a Light source)
What are parasitic fungi?
Fungi which feed from other animals
What is the name of the fungus that produces penicillin?
Penicillium
What are antibiotics?
A product made by one microorganism to kill off another microorganism, only bacteria.
How is penicillin made?
The large-scale production of penicillin takes place in industrial fermenters. Penicillin is a secondary metabolic product as it is made by the penicillium fungi.
