Invertibrate Animals Flashcards
What is the definition of invertebrate?
An animal without a backbone.
What are the four groups of invertebrates?
Nematodes, annelids, molluscs, arthropods.
What are the characteristics of nematodes?
They are often parricides inside the gut of another animal, and have bodies that are specialised for feeding and reproducing
What are the characteristics of annelids?
They have a long segmented body and chaetae. An example of an annelid is an earthworm. They are herbivores.
What are chaetae?
They are the bristles that are found on each segment of an annelid. They are used during movement.
What are the characteristics of molluscs?
They have a hardshell protecting a soft body with no limbs. The shell helps to save water, and it moves around on foot (which is a muscle with a slimy covering) they are mainly herbivores.
What are the four types of arthropods?
Insects, crustacea, myriapods, arachnids.
What is metamorphosis?
The adaptation of life that allows them to use the resources of their habitat to the maximum.
What are characteristics of insects?
Their body is segmented into a head, Thorax and abdomen. They have Antenne to sence chemicals in environment. They have 3 pairs of legs. They have two pairs of wings.
What are features of crustacea?
They have a carapace (a thick hard shell for protection against predators). They have hard, serrated edge to their claws.
What are the features of myriapods?
They have antennalike, which are important sense organs in the dark. Hard exoskeleton to protect against predators. They have many walking legs to allow movement over with services. And they have many body segments to allow flexible movement. Note: millipedes are herbivores and centipedes are Carnivores.
What are the features of arachnids?
Their head and thorax are combined into one body part. They have powerful piercing jaws for catching prey. They have 4 pairs of legs. They have a large abdomen, with the spinneret, which produces thin strands of silk.
