How do you test for alkenes?
A
Add bromine water and shake
Result = bromine decolourises (orange —> colourless)

How do you test for haloalkanes?
A
Add NaOH and warm
Acidify with HNO3
Add AgNO3
Results:
AgCl = white ppt
AgBr = cream
AgI = yellow

How do you test for alcohols?
A
Add acidified potassium dichromate
Result = orange —> green (primary + secondary, NOT TERTIARY)

A
- Warm with Fehling’s solution
Result = brick red ppt - Warm with Tollen’s reagent
Result = silver mirror

A
Add sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)
Result = effervescence / CO2 given off
