Organelles Flashcards
Define organelles
Small structures inside cells that perform a specific function
What is the structure of a nucleus
A spherical structre enclosed by a double layer of plasma membrane which has pores and also contains a nucleolus
Role of nucleus
Composed of chromosomes which contain the cells genetic DNA material
Role of the mitochondria
Site of aerobic respiration and provides energy for the cell in the form of ATP.
Where are ribosomes found?
Floating alone in the cell or attached to the e.r
Role: Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis
Structure: Ribosomes
Non-membrane bound organlles that are made up of rRNA and protein
Role: Rough ER
Involved in the synthesis and transportation of proteins
Structure: Rough ER
A series of membrane bound channels, studded with proteins
Role: Smooth ER
Involved in the synthesis and transportation of lipids
Role: Golgi Apparatus
Stores, modifies and pacakages synthesised proteins for secretion from the cell
Role and structure of lysosomes
Membrane bound strcutres that contain digestive enzymes> lysosomes digest any unwanted structures or substances inside the cell
Define cytosol
Fluid inside the cell that surrounds the organelles
Define cytoplasm
Fluid inside the cell that includes the cytosol and the fluid inside all the organelles exept the nucleus
Define protoplasm
All the fluid inside the cell including the cytoplasm and the fluid inside the nucleus
