what is it?
A
benign
small, oval, well circumscribed
mahogany brown with a stellate star

what is the histology?
A
oncocytoma = very pink and granular cytoplasm oncocyte = big pink cell - fluffy cytoplasm (granular cytoplasm = packed with mitochondria)

how does it present?
A
incidental finding
loin pain
haematuria

how is it investigated?
A
CT: spoke, wheel pattern
biopsy: uncertain - similarities to chromophobe RCC

how is it managed?
A
the same way as RCC
small tumour <3cm
- surveillance in elderly unfit patients
- ablation techniques in fit and elderly patients
- selected younger patients
larger tumour >3cm
- partial nephrectomy
- radical nephrectomy - for large tumours done laproscopically
