What is ESRD?
A
Irreversible chronic kidney damage that has progressed to an extent that renal replacement therapy is required for survival

Who usually gets ESRD?
A
> 63 years old

Presnetation of ESRD?
A
- Crepitations due to pulmonary oedema
- Ammonia breath, metallic taste, gum ulcerations
- Cough
- HT, pericarditis
- Ankle swelling/oedema
- N/V
- Skin: dry, itchy, purpura, yellow-grey, ecchymosis
- Raised JVP
- Pale conjunctiva/tongue

Investigations for end stage renal disease?
A
Monthly monitoring of:
- Renal function
- FBC
- Haematinic assay
- Bone profile
- PTH measurement
- Hep B, C and HIV serology every 6-12 months

Management of ESRD?
A
Haemodialysis
Peritoneal dialysis
Renal transplantation

What is haemodialysis?
A
Removal of XS fluid and waste products from blood by passing it through an artificial kidney outside body (x3 a week)
