Dialysis Flashcards
Indications for dialysis?
AEIOU A: Acidosis E: Electrolyte abnormalities I: Intoxication O: Oedema U: Uraemia
What is peritoneal dialysis?
Using peritoneal membrane as filtration membrane
Complications of peritoneal dialysis?
Bacterial peritonitis Peritoneal sclerosis Ultrafiltration failure Weight gain Psychological effects
What is haemodialysis?
Blood filtered by haemodialysis machine
Methods of getting good blood supply for haemodialysis?
- Tunnelled cuffed catheter
- Arterio-venous fistula
What is tunnel cuffed catheter?
Tube inserted into subclavian or jugular vein with tip that sits in SVC or right atrium
What is arterio-venous fistula?
Artificial connection between artery and vein
Arterio venous fistula is usally formed between which vessels?
- Radio-cephalic
- Brachio-cephalic
- Brachio-basilic
what are the indications for dialysis?
hyperkalaemia unresponsive to treatment
acidosis - unwell because they try to compensate
pulmonary oedema - refractory to diuretics
uraemia complications
what should you do with acidosis because of compensation?
bicarbonate - if you overload them - breathless
so dialysis might be good idea
what uraemia complications would indicate dialysis?
pericarditis
encephalopathy
