Hyperkalaemia Flashcards
1
Q
What is hyperkalaemia?
A
High serum K+
Main complication = cardiac arrhythmias
2
Q
Conditions causing hyperkalaemia?
A
- AKI
- CKD
- Rhabdomyolysis
- Adrenal insufficiency
- Tumour lysis syndrome
3
Q
Medications causing hyperkalaemia?
A
Aldosterone antagonists
- ACEis
- ARBs
- NSAIDs
- K+ supplements

5
Q
ECG signs in hyperkalaemia?
A
Tall peaked T waves
Flattening/absence of p waves
Broad QRS complexes
6
Q
Management of hyperkalaemia?
A
-Close ECG monitoring
If K+ is <6mmol/L with stable renal function don’t need urgent treatment and may just need diet change and stopping med
If K+ >6mmol/L + ECG changes: need urgent treatment
If patient K+ >.5mmol/L needs urgent treatment irrespective of ECG pattern

- Sodium bicarbonate
- Dialysis
