What are the Side Effects and Precautions of Olanzapine

Side Effects (SED)
CNS
- Sedation 
- Dizziness
Other
- Extrapyrmidal symptoms and QT prolongation. 

Precautions

  • Olanzapine is less effective if pt agitation is due to the effects of drug or alcohol intoxication, Especially (stimulants)
  • Elderly and frail or children are more susceptible to adverse effects.

Route of Administration and Special Notes

- ODT

Special Notes

  • Administration to pts less than 16 years of age should be consulted with the receiving hospital.
  • Pts should self administer the medication under paramedic supervision.
  • Olanazapine is managed as a restricted medication under AV policy.
  • Olanzapine and Odansatron are similar in name and presentation, care should be undertaken when administering these medications.

Onset: 15 minutes
Duration: 12 - 24 Hours.
