What is the Pharmacology of Odansetron
A
Anti-emetic
5HT3 receptor antagonist which blockers receptors centrally and peripherally.

What is the Presentation of Odansetron and how is it Metabolized

Presentation
- 4mg ODT
- 8mg in 4ml IV solution
Metabolized
- By the Liver.

What are the Indications and Contraindications of Odansetron
A
Indications
- Undifferentiated nausea and vomiting.
- Prophylaxis in spinally immobilized or eye injured pts.
- Vestibular nausea in pts < 21 years of age (Contraindicated for Stematil)
Contraindications (Odans dance)
- Hypersensitivity to Odansetron
- Hypokalemia (Low Potassium) Hypomagnesemia (low magnesium)
- Long QT syndrome
- Concurrent use of ApoMorphine (Parkinson’s Medication)

What are the Side effects and Precautions of Odansetron
A
Side Effects (CHEFD Common) Common - Constipation - Headache - Rise in liver Enzymes - Fever - Dizziness
Uncommon (WTSHEEP)
- Wide QRS complex
- Tachyarrythmias
- Seizures
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Extrapyrmidal reactions
- Eyes (Visual Disturbance)
- Prolongation of Qt segment
Precautions (LEAPT)
- Pts with liver disease shouldn’t receive more than 8mg of Odansetron a day.
- Care should be taken with pts on diuretics who have underlying electrolyte imbalances.
- Concurrent use of Tramadol
- Pregnancy
- Ondansatron contains Aspartamne and should not be given to patients with Phenylketouria.

Route of Administration
- ODT
- IV
Special Notes
IV doses should be pushed as a slow does (minimum of 30 seconds) due to potential of adverse effects.
ODT effects - Onset: 2 Minutes - Peak: 20 Minutes - Duration: 2 Hours IV - Onset: 5 minutes - Peak: 10 Minutes - Duration: Between 2.5 and 6.1 Hours.
