What is Ceftriaxone Pharmacology
Cephalosporin Antibiotic.
- Ceftriaxone selectively and irreversibly inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to transpeptidases
What is the Presentation of Ceftriaxone and how is it metabolized.
Excreted in Urine.
What are the Indications and Contraindications
Indications
- Suspected Meningococcal Septicemia.
- Severe Sepsis (Consult only)
Contraindication
- Allergy to Cephalosporin Antibiotic
What are the Precautions and Side Effects of Ceftriaxone
Side Effects.
- Nausea/ Vomiting
- Skin Rash
Precautions
- Allergy to Penicillin.
Special Notes
Usual Dose:
- 1g for Adults
- 50mg/kg (Max 1g) for children.
Ceftriaxone IV
- Must be made up and diluted to 10ml using sterile water and Administered over 2 Minutes.
Ceftriaxone IM
- Must be made up to 4ml using 1% lignocaine and given in the lateral thigh.
