Occupational Lung Diseases & Psychological workplace hazard Flashcards
what is pneumoconiosis ?
are a group of chronic lung diseases caused by long-term exposure to respirable particles of mineral dust
which lung diseases fall under the umbrella of pneumoconiosis ?
silicosis
asbestosis
coal worker pneumoconiosis
what type of pattern is shown on pulmonary function tests with pneumoconiosis ?
restrictive patterns
what type of exposure causes silicosis ?
exposure to silica in mining, glass industry, ceramic, pottery or sandblasting
what is the X-ray appearance of silicosis ?
- nodular opacities of varying size more at the upper fields of the lungs
- there may be hilar LN calcifications, egg shell appearance
what complications are commonly associated with silicosis ?
TB
Cor-pulmonale
bronchogenic carcinoma
where is the exposure of asbestosis commonly found ?
manufacturing of car brakes
insulation
cement or roofing
what kind of symptoms are associated with asbestosis ?
signs of lung fibrosis ( fine crepitations at the base of the lung due to fibrosis )
what is the x-ray image of asbestosis ?
- opacities at the base of the lung, tenting the diaphragm
2. pleural thickening
what are the complications associated with asbestosis ?
cor-pulmonale
mesothelioma
what are the types of CWP ?
- simple coal worker pneumoconiosis
- progressive massive fibrosis
- caplan syndrome
what is the difference in x-ray images of simple coal workers pneumoconiosis and progressive massive fibrosis ?
simple coal worker :
small regular opacities
progressive massive fibrosis:
larger opacities with central necrosis
what are the characteristics of caplans syndrome ?
nodular opacities in the right lung along with rheumatoid arthritis
what are the clinical forms of hypersensitivity pneumonitis ?
acute
chronic
what is the difference in presentation between the acute and chronic form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis ?
acute shows flu like symptoms
chronic has restrictive patterns mainly on lung functions along with impaired gas transfer
