New Hire 16 Flashcards
First component of the Comcast cable network. Responsible for receiving and processing signals and then sending those signals over the Comcast network to customers
Headend
Types of headends
DCRF(dry creek road facility)The headend
Serves as a gateway to both the public internet and Comcasts own managed nationwide network
The headend
Collects signals from a variety of sources, such as satellite feeds, and directs them to headend
DCRF
Benefits of using fiber optic cable for transportation of signals
Low signal loss,Greater bandwidth,Increased security, Flexibility and durability
Benefits of the hfc network
Enhanced signal quality, Increased network reliability, Increased flexibility to quickly launch new and complex services
Transforms light energy from optical cable to RF or electrical energy on the coaxial output
The node
Transports modulated light between the fiber node and the headend
Fiber optic link
Used for routing or splitting signals. Does not require power to operate
Passive devices
Allows signals to and from the customer in this part of the network. Provides the conversion from the fiber optical cable to coaxial cable
Fiber node
Is connected to the coax cable. The RF energy is used to modulate the laser emission.it uses special lenses to focus light into the fiber optic cable.
Laser transmitter
Carries signals to and from the node through the hardline coaxial cable to communities for connection to the customer drop
Distribution system
Active device(3 examples)
Amplifiers, Power supplies, Nodes
Starts at the tap and terminates at the cpe
Drop system
Attached at the tap or in the house to prevent reception of certain frequencies
Traps/filters
Attached to the drop at the tap to protect the trap and ensure that it will not be removed by an unauthorized person
Security sleeves/shields
TechOps app that allows techs to get access to the latest news, alerts and info

Internet
When was Comcast founded
1963 as American Cable Systems. Our first system was built in Tupelo, Mississippi. Largest cable operator in USA
Provides customers with reference information for quick and efficient resolution of inquiries and/or problemsGives customers confidence that they are receiving services from a reputable company
Welcome Kit
U.S government agency established in 1934 to regulate electronic communications
FCC(federal communications commission)
Rule of three: xfinity tv
Provide a welcome kit, Demonstrate navigation of the onscreen guide, Explain how xfinity on demand and xfinitytv.com work
Rule of three: xfinity Internet
Ask the customer to create an xfinity.net e-mail and password, Take the customer through the online welcome site xfinity.comcast.net, Demonstrate xfinity.comcast.net benefits/Welcome kit
Rule of three: xfinity voice
Confirm customers new phone number, Demonstrate voicemail and deliver Comcast welcome kit/Discuss benefits of xfinity connect
A type of cable which contains two conductors, one inside and the other outside around it, separated by an insulating layer
Coax cable
coax cable consists of
center conductor, layer of insulating material called dielectric, braid/foild shield, outer jacket
copper-clad steel is used for
drop cable center conductor
copper-clad aluminium is used for
hard line cable center conductor
substance that allows heat or electricity to pass along or through it
conductor
characteristic of RF propagation in a cable in which higher frequencies tend to travel along the surface of the conductor rather than throughout its mass
skin effect
most common dielectric material
polyethylene foam
density of ____ determines the impedence of the cable
dielectric
serves as return conductor for ground current on drop system
coax shielding (aluminum braid/foil)
type of cable used in MDUs and long drops
QR320
this cable must be used in all aerial installations
messenger cable
