Neuron Anatomy Flashcards
nerves
bundles of individual neurons
central nervous system consists of
the brain and the spinal cord
peripheral nervous system consists of
everything else, nerves attached to the brain and spinal cord
what does the cns do
it is the master control unit
what does the pns do
links the body to the world
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
regulates involuntary body processes
What does the somatic nervous system do?
carries sensory info from sensory organs to cns
spinal cord
column of nerves b/t brain and pns
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
prepares body for action and stress
parasympathetic nervous system do?
calms body and helps energy conservation
neuron types
sensory motor and interneurons
sensory neurons
detect changes in internal and external enviornment
motor neurons
control muscle contractions and gland secretion
Soma
cell body of a neruon
dendrites
branchlike structure attached to soma
axon hillock
connects cell body to axon, region where plasma membrane generates action potentials
axon
long tube that conveys info from soma to terminal buttons
terminal buttons
buds at the end of axon branch that sends info to other neurons
synapse
junction b/t terminal button and part of the soma/dendrite
axoplasmic transport
how info travels. 2 types: anterograde and retrograde
anterograde transport
movement from soma to terminal buttons; mediated by kinesin proteins
retrograde transport
movement from terminal buttons to soma; mediated by dynein proteins
benefit of hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail structure of cell membrane?
makes it harder for water and water-soluble materials to cross
Golgi apparatus
type of smooth er that edits proteins made in rough er. packages into vesicles for sending
glial cells (2 things)
suppot cells in the cns that give nutrients to neurons and helps remove dead neurons
Astrocytes
star cells that consume dead cells in cns, can travel through cns, and limit neurotransmitters
oligodendrocytes
form mylein in cns, one can mylenate multiple axons
microglia
smallest glial cells, help immune response from trauma to brain
schwann cells
only support cell in pns, form mylein sheath, one cell per one segment
blood brain barrier
barrier b/t blood and fluid surrounding cells of the brain and spinal cord
what does the blood brain barrier do
makes it easier to regulate extracellular fluid to allow messages to be sent from inside to outside the brain
