CNS and PNS Flashcards
What protects the CNS?
Bones (Skull and spinal columns) meninges, and cerebrospinal fluid
Dura mater
1st layer of meninges, tough thick layer with no stretch
Arachnoid mater
2nd layer of meninges, soft and spongy, web-like
Subarachnoid space
3rd layer of meninges, filled with CSF
Pia mater
4th layer of meninges, smaller blood vessels, follows all surfaces
Cerebrospinal fluid
clear fluid that fills the ventricular system
3 purposes of CSF
allows brain to float, reduces shock, and reduces pressure
Hydrocephalus
An obstruction of the ventricular system due to CSF not draining
CNS: spinal cord
connects brain to PNS, distributes motor info, operates separate from brain through reflexes
Dorsal root
spinal root that contains incoming (afferent) sensory neurons
Ventral root
spinal root that contains outgoing (efferent) motor axons
What protects the PNS?
the dura and pia mater
2 types of nerves in CNS
spinal and cranial
