Infectious diseases, schizophrenia, and affective disorders Flashcards
What is the body’s natural response to injury or infection
inflammation
In the CNS, the inflammatory response involves what
the activation of microglia which leads to neuroinflammation
Encephalitis
inflammation of the brain tissue with 2 subtypes (infectious and autoimmune)
Infectious enceph
caused by viral infection (measles, mumps, herpes, etc)
Autoimmune enceph
caused by antibodies/immune system attacking the brain
-causes brain swelling
-progresses over days/week
Encephalitis treatments
depends on cause
antivirals
antibacterial
immunotherapy
Enceph prognosis
can lead to brain damage
mild: full recovery
mod/severe: permanent cog and physical deficits, death
Meningitis
inflammation of fluid and protective layers of meninges of brain and spinal cord
viral: caused by viral infection (most common)
bacterial: bacterial infection
Other: fungal/parasitic/turbulosis
Menin treatment
depends on course/symptoms
antiviral and antibacterial
Menin prognosis
viral usually mild, full recovery
bacterial 15-20% death
Schizophrenia
2+ core features for a sig. period of time during a 1 month period
-continuous signs for 6 months with at least one month of active symptoms
-1% of world pop
-ass with DISC 1 gene
Schizo environmental factors
prenatal malnutrition, tobacco use during pregnancy, viral infection during preg, vitamin D def during childhood
Positive symptoms
hallucinations, delusions, adding things that normal people dont have.
-overactive mesolimbic dopamine circuits
