Nerve supply to the maxilla Flashcards
The nerves supplying the teeth + gums
are the alveolar + palatine branches on the maxillary nerve
- Anterior superior alveolar nerve
supplies sensation incisors + canines + labial gum of these teeth (1,2,3) it also supplies sensation from soft tissues of upper lip + around nostrils
- Middle superior alveolar nerve
supplies sensation the premolars, anterior part of the first molar + buccal gum of these teeth (4,5, part of 6)
- Posterior superior alveolar nerve
supplies sensation the remainder of the 1st, 2nd + 3rd molars + buccal gum of these teeth (rest of 6, 7, 8)
Anterior + middle superior alveolar nerves
branch off from the maxillary nerve in the floor of the orbit, they pass down inside the maxilla, in the walls of the maxillary sinus to reach the teeth
- (palatal nerves) Naso-palatine (formerly long sphenopalatine) nerve
supplies palatal gum of incisors + part of canines - it passes through the floor of nasal cavity to reach surface of palate through the incisive foramen behind the central incisors
- (palatal nerves) Greater palatine nerve
supplies palatal gum of the canine, premolars + molars
it passes through the back of the maxilla + reaches surface of the hard palate through the greater palatine foramen opposite the third molar.
The maxillary nerve
emerges from the base of the brain, leaves the skull through the Foramen rotundum + passes through the floor of eye socket (orbit).
