Diabetes Flashcards
Outline
refers to group of disorders affecting pancreas that are characterised by raised concentration of glucose in blood - results in inability of the body cells to metabolise glucose correctly
Types
Type 1 (insulin dependent), Type 2 (non-insulin dependent) the effects of disease on oral cavity are same for both:
Xerostomia
dry mouth, the cleansing + lubricating effects of saliva will be reduced + more risk of developing caries
Poor wound healing
the peripheral blood supply is reduced in all areas of Boyd + pts tend to heal poorly + be more prone to conditions like chronic periodontal disease
Infection
peripheral vascular disease + peripheral neuropathy result in reduced blood flow + nerve sensation in oral cavity. So infections more likely + can often develop more readily into abscesses + more serious conditions
