Stomatitis
A
a general inflammatory condition affecting oral cavity:
- often occurs in elderly + denture wearers
- mucosa appears red + inflamed + often has an overlying candida infection present
- responds well to improved oral + denture hygiene in most cases
- can be due to general debilitation + malnutrition especially in elderly

Angular cheilitis
A
inflammation at corners (angles) of mouth:
- often occurs in elderly + denture as extension of stomatitis
- appears red + inflamed angles, often with cracking of surface on mouth opening
- often sue to loss of facial height, allowing saliva to pool in area
- wet conditions produced allow infection with common skin micro-organisms such as staphylococcus aureus

Glossitis
A
inflammation of tongue which appears as red, smooth + sore:
- often seen in iron deficiency anaemia
- also occurs when extensive candida infection is present in debilitated pts
- may also indicate vitamin B deficiencies

Burning mouth syndrome
A
usually occurs in elderly women + is described as oral cavity feeling ‘as though on fire’
- usually no physical abnormality is found on exam
- considered psychogenic in many cases, due to depression, fear of cancer or other serious disorders
