Stomatitis

A

a general inflammatory condition affecting oral cavity:

  • often occurs in elderly + denture wearers
  • mucosa appears red + inflamed + often has an overlying candida infection present
  • responds well to improved oral + denture hygiene in most cases
  • can be due to general debilitation + malnutrition especially in elderly

Angular cheilitis

A

inflammation at corners (angles) of mouth:

  • often occurs in elderly + denture as extension of stomatitis
  • appears red + inflamed angles, often with cracking of surface on mouth opening
  • often sue to loss of facial height, allowing saliva to pool in area
  • wet conditions produced allow infection with common skin micro-organisms such as staphylococcus aureus

Glossitis

A

inflammation of tongue which appears as red, smooth + sore:

  • often seen in iron deficiency anaemia
  • also occurs when extensive candida infection is present in debilitated pts
  • may also indicate vitamin B deficiencies

Burning mouth syndrome

A

usually occurs in elderly women + is described as oral cavity feeling ‘as though on fire’

  • usually no physical abnormality is found on exam
  • considered psychogenic in many cases, due to depression, fear of cancer or other serious disorders
