Anatomy of the skull Flashcards
Cranium
the hollow cavity which surrounds the brain
Face
the front vertical part of the skull, containing the orbital cavities of the eyes and the nasal cavity of the nose
Jaws
the upper + lower jaws of oral cavity, supporting the teeth + tongue + providing the openings for the respiratory tract + digestive tract
1.
All the bones of skull except lower jaw (mandible) are fixed to each other by immovable joints called sutures
2.
the base (underside) of cranium articulates with topmost bone of the vertebral column, (the atlas) + allows nodding movements of the head
3.
the skull develops in foetus as cartilage, which is gradually converted to bone during growth of body Into adulthood
4.
the outer layer of bone is called compact bone + perforated by many natural bony openings (foramina) to allow the passage of nerve + blood vessels.
5.
the inner layer is called cancellous bone + is sponge like in appearance, because if it was solid it would make bone too heavy for muscles to be able to lift
6.
nerves + blood vessels run freely within the spongy structure of cancellous layer + pass into + out of it through the foramina
