Nerve supply of the mandible Flashcards
Nerve supplying the lower teeth + gums
are the inferior dental (alveolar), lingual + long buccal branches of the mandibular nerve
the mandibular division emerges from skull through foramen ovale + splits into 4 branches which carry motor + sensory components
The mandibular nerve passes
down the base of the skull on the inner side of ramus of mandible, between medial + lateral pterygoid muscles + divides into above branches
1.Inferior alveolar nerve
supplies sensations from all lower teeth, + from the buccal; or labial gingivae of all except the molar teeth
also supplies sensation from soft tissues of lower lip + chin + enters mandible through the mandibular foramen
It is situated
at the centre of the inner surface of the ramus, its guarded on its front edge by a small bony projection called the lingula
After entering mandibular foramen
the nerve passes through a canal running inside the mandible, below the apices of the teeth
the end branch of inferior alveolar nerve
emerges on the outer surface of mandible through the mental foramen which is below the apices of the premolars
from this point, it is called
the mental nerve + supplies buccal gum of incisors, canines, premolars, lower lip + chin
- Long buccal nerve
supplies the buccal gum of molars, it passes into the gum on outer surface of mandible, over the external oblique ridge
- Lingual nerve
supplies sensation from lingual gum of all lower teeth, passes along floor of the mouth on inner surface of the mandible, above the mylohyoid muscle. it also supplies the anterior two thirds of the tongue + floor of the mouth
- Motor branch
supplies stimulation to the muscles of mastication, to effect jaw closing + chewing movements
