as a primary infection in childhood which takes the form of an acute inflammation of oral soft tissues called gingivostomatitis, + appearing as multiple painful ulcers within oral cavity

recurrent condition after initial primary herpes simplex infection, commonly called cold sore + on lips

A
shingles, occurs as a reactivation of the virus in pts previously infected with chicken pox (herpes varicella) + can affect area supplied by trigeminal nerve (oral cavity) as well as skin of the torso
