Cranium Flashcards

1
Q

Outline

A

At birth + during infancy, bony plates making up cranium are separated from each other by two natural membrane-covered spaces called fontanelles - allow growth of brain without bony restriction

Q

During growth

A

the spaces gradually become filled with bone + close together to provide a protective helmet surrounding brain. the bony plates join together like jigsaw at the coronoid sutures

Q

By age 18 months

A

the fontanelles should have closed completely, following natural growth together of bony plates making up the cranium

Q

The cranium

A

is composed of 8 bones which are separated by coronoid sutures - these are visible on dry skull as zig-zagged joints between bony plates

Q

All the sensory nerve cells

A

running from body to brain + motor nerves running from brain to body have to pass in + out of this bony cavity through the natural foramina on the underside of the cranium

Q

Similarly, all blood vessels supplying head + neck structures

A

pass through these same foramina or between natural spaces between adjacent bones called fissures

Q

In addition to these bony openings,

A

some cranial bones also have various bony projections + plates on their outer surfaces, which serve as attachments for ligaments + muscles associated with head + jaw movements or which form part of various facial structures

Q

The largest foramen of all in cranium

A

is the foramen magnum, which opens through the occipital bone + allows exit of spinal cord from the base of the brain + into the vertebral column of the spine

Q

The 12 pairs of nerves

A
