Maxillary nerve Flashcards
Nerves
Teeth, jaws + face are supplied by the 5th cranial nerve (out of 12) the tringeminal nerve one for left + one for right side
it splits into three divisions: ophthalmic, maxillary + mandible nerves
Maxillary nerve
emerges from the base of the brain, leaves skull through the foramen rotundum + passes forward through the floor of the orbit (eye socket)
Before entering the orbit
it gives off its posterior superior alveolar + palatine branches
Within the orbit
it gives off the middle + anterior superior alveolar nerves
Comes from the orbit through
the infra-orbital foramen on the front of the maxilla to supply skin + mucosa membrane of the lower eyelid, cheek + upper lip
Posterior superior alveolar nerve
enters the back of the maxilla to reach its destination
The greater palatine nerve
also passes through the back of the maxilla + reaches the surface of the hard palate through the greater palatine foramen, opposite the third molar tooth
The nasopalatine nerve
passes through the floor of the nasal cavity to reach the surface of the palate through the incisive foramen behind the central incisors
The anterior + middle superior dental nerves
branch off from the maxillary nerve in the floor of the orbit. they pass down inside the maxilla, in the walls of the maxillary sinus, to reach the teeth.
The sensory nerve impulses
from the upper teeth + their surrounding soft tissue structures pass from the nerve endings back along these nerve pathways to the maxillary nerve trunk, + then enter the skull + join the other two divisions to form trigeminal nerve trunk, which then enters the brain itself
It supplies:
the skin of posterior part of the side of nose, lower eyelid, cheek, upper lip, lateral side of orbit + has 3 branches:
- Infraorbital nerve:
is a direct continuation of maxillary nerve. leaves orbit via infraorbital foramen. it gives numerous small branches that supply skin of lower eyelid, cheek + side of nose + upper lip
- Zygomaticofacial nerve:
passes onto face via small foramen on lateral side of zygomatic bone to supply skin over the cheek
- Zygomaticotemporal:
passes through a small foramen on the posterior part of zygomatic bone to supply skin of temple.
