All helos can be SAR assist.

All helos (except cobra) can potentially be SAR capable or deploy rafts.

Helos w/ a rescue hoist are overwater recovery capable.

Helos w/ an auto hover system are night overwater recovery capable. Helos that can gain a visible horizon through NVGs may also be night overwater hover capable.

Question 2

Does the SAR swimmer always have to deploy to assist survivors?

Answer 2

SAR swimmer shall deploy and assist in all cases unless the HAC determines that the circumstances will unnecessarily endanger the rescue aircrewman.

Open ocean deployment of rescue swimmers: training and operational

Day/VMC - may deploy for training if parent vessel is in close proximity

Night/IMC - shall only deploy for actual SAR/mission essential evolutions
