ACS control zone (size and entering)
5NM radius, 2500’ MSL
Unless cleared by the controlling agency, A/C shall not enter the ship control zone.
VMC min for ACS
500/1
Lateral separation
5 miles
3 miles if w/in 50 miles and air search radar rotates >7 RPM
Vertical separation
Helicopter/Helicopter: 500’
Helicopter/Fixed Wing: 1000’
Advisory control requirements
Monitoring radar/radio to advise pilot of traffic/op areas/hazard areas.
Shall be used where traffic density requires higher degree of control for SOF than VMC
Normally limited to VMC, recommended when positive control not required
Positive Control Requirements
Actively controlling or on approach/departure
Specific altitudes and headings (separation is responsibility of controller)
Shall be used when any of these:
- Less than 500 or 1
- 30 min after sunset to 30 min before sunrise (OTC/CO modifiable)
Maintaining Comms
All helos shall be under positive comms control @ sea unless otherwise directed.
Pilots shall not shift freqs w/o notifying and/or obtaining permission from controller
Authorization for launch of A/C w/o radio comms
The operations officer, with the concurrence of the commanding officer, may authorize the launch of an aircraft without radio communications if circumstances warrant and overall safety is maintained;
however, except under
conditions of extreme emergency or
when tactical situations dictate otherwise,
two-way communications are mandatory for helicopter operations…
- At night.
- During periods of low ceiling and visibility.
- For flight beyond visual range of the ship.
Departure procedure: Day VMC
Per NATOPS
Night/IMC departure procedure
On stipulated departure course
Climb to minimum of 300’ prior to commencing a turn
Major Numbers for TACAN approach
IAF: BRC or 30 deg offset
FAF: 1.5 NM, 200’
Wx min: 200/ 1/2
MAP: 200’, 0.5 NM
If visual: continue w/ normal approach
If not visual by MPA: 30 degree heading change (maintain heading if offset), climb to 400’
If no instructions by 3NM or 3 min: go to Marshall
Departing an Amphibious ACS
Clear control zone 300’ AGL and below
Shall not cross behind stern w/in 1 mile w/o HCS clearance
Delta Patterns
Overhead: counterclockwise racetrack at 500’ MSL
Port/Starboard: Racetracks next to ship at altitude assigned. Downwind turn at amidships
Shooting approach below mins (ACS)
When suitable bingo field/deck is available, A/C shall not commence IFR approach below mins unless A/C has sufficient fuel to divert in event of missed
