When is a weighted bag required to lift cargo by rescue hoist?
Weighs less than 30 lbs
Sea state limit for submarine personnel transfer
Transfer should not be attempted in a sea state above 4
Transfer locations for subs and relative winds
In priority:
- Center of main deck (SSBN only), 320-350 @ 15-20
- Port sail plane/top of sail, 010-040 @ 15-20
- Starboard sail plane, 160-200 @ 15-20

Helo may turn on flood/hover lights
Can you recover a drone or torpedo?
Drones/torpedoes shall be recovered only by specially configured helos w/ trained crew
Winds for VERTREP
Optimum: Headwind (330-030) w/ 15-30 kts
Acceptable: Quartering Headwind (270-330 or 030-090) 15-30 kts
Is good winds or steady deck preferred for VERTREP?
Steady deck but still w/in acceptable winds (to abeam either side)
Can you conduct VERTREP in a turn?
Yes if A/C Commander and HCO deem it safe
VERTREPing for long distances
Over 25 miles is not standard. High Pri cargo
Overflying ship w/ an external load
Shall not overfly unless op necessity dictates
Day/Night VERTREP Hours limits
Day: 6-8 hrs generally accepted
Night: 2-3 hrs
Night VERTREP requirements
One or more of the following (appropriately certified ship):
- Natural horizon is present
- Drop/pickup zone of ship to be worked is clearly visible from A/C’s cockpit when over the drop/pickup zone of the transferring/receiving ship
VERTREP to attack subs
May be conducted day VFR. PIC decision on safety.
VERTREP to SSBN/SSGN (Day,Night,Winds)
Day is feasible on routine basis
Night is feasible on limited basis (LSE, sail, planes, VERTREP area illuminated)
Wind NGT 20 kts, 320-350 relative ideal, 270-360 relative acceptable
Landing on Crow’s foot
Pilot over buttline
Lined up w/ Fore/Aft lineup line
Wheels in wheel box if there are ones for H-60
How may sets of VERTREP T lines on LPDs?
2 sets. Aft one is for A/C parked on upper spots.
Sea State parking limit LPD
Up to Sea State 7
Refueling in cold wx
Higher risk of static elec
Refuel ASAP after shutdown to prevent water in tanks
Pax transfer in cold wx
Should be kept to minimum (op necessity)
Shortest distance (visual range if possible)
Establish comms for whole transfer
