Mutations Flashcards
Mutagenic Agents
Radiation , chemicals, x-Rays, ultra violet rays (they can cause mutations)
Mutation
Any change in genetic information, MUST be in sex cells to be passes on to offspring
Genetic mutations
Change in the DNA sequence ->causes a change in the amino acid sequence in protein
List the sequence of what determines what
DNA determines amino acid sciences which determines protein shape which determines protein functions
Point mutation
One nucleotide is changed for another
Frame shift mutation
Addition or deletion of one or more nucleotides , Dangerous because EVERY amino acid after that point will be changed
Chromosomal mutations
Can be detected by looking at a karyote (picture of chromosome)
Nondisjunction
Chromosomes don’t separate properly during meiosis, result in one extra or one less chromosome , can cause Down syndrome
Down syndrome
Trisomy 21(three 21st chromosome), mental retardation , almond shaped eyes, small ears, small head size, short , broad hands. Down’s syndrome karyotype
Polypoidy
Extra sets of chromosomes or more than two( 3N,4N…) positive mutations in some plants
Deletion and addition(insertion )
Portion of a chromosome is lost or added
Inversion
Sections of chromosomes are switched around
Translocation
Part of a chromosome is transferred to another
