immune system Flashcards
pathogens
Bacteria: bronchitis
Protist: malaria
Fungi: athletes foot
inherited
Sickle cell anemia, hemophilia
pollutants
Biological molds, dander, etc in the air causes asthma. Chemical causes brain damage, seizures, death
organ malfunction
heart attack, kidney failure
lifestyle choices
lung cancer caused by smoking, skin cancer STDS HIV AIDS (abstinence!!!!)
1st line defense
Skin membranes (blocks from entering body), sweat tears and saliva (contain chemicals tht kill bacteria), mucus (entraps pathogen), stomach acid (destroys many pathogens in food)
2nd line of defense
Inflammatory response (local reaction prick finger sends out histamines) macrophages (giant WBC phagocytes digest pathogens)
3rd line defense (immune system)
Antigen (causes immune response), lymphocytes (WBC recognize specific antigen) including B-cells (memorize antigen) T-cells (helper recognize, killer attack)
Active immunity
Get dead/weak form of disease/it’s product to trigger immune response
Inborn immunity
Immunity present at birth
Passive immunity
Given antibodies from outside source (breast milk)
Allergy
Immune response to something harmless
HIV
Causes aids, kills dem WBC to weaken immune system
Organ transplant
Take immunosuppressants to decrease immune response so they don’t reject new organ
