Musculoskeletal histology Flashcards
what are the differences between cells, tissue and organs
cell: single, basic unit of life
Tissue: group of cells working together
Organ: group of tissues working together to provide a bodily function
what colours do different structures appear when stained with romanowsky stain
- nucleus/nucleoproteins = blue/purple
- cytoplasmic granules = blue or orange
- cytoplasm = red/orange
what colours do different cellular structures appear when stained with haematoxylin and Eosin
- nucleus/nucleoproteins = blue/purple
- cytoplasmic granules = blue or orange
- cytoplasm/collagen/protein = red/orange/pink
- cartilage = pale blue
what is methylene blue stain used for
- injected into tissue planes to delineate neoplasms
neoplasm: abnormal growth of cells

what is fluorescein stain used for
- IV to identify devitalised tissue (colic surgeries)
- Eye ulcers
what is immunohistochemistry
the process of detecting antigens in a tissue by using antibodies to understand the distribution and localization of different antigens
