Divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
What does the CNS control
- brain
- spinal cord
what does the PNS control
- cranial nerves
- spinal nerves
- autonomics
what does the ENS control
- enteric control
- GIT
what are the arrows pointing to
Blue: nerons (nerve cells) = functional units of the nervous system
Red: neuroglia (glial cells) =
- supporting cells
- outnumber neurons 10:1
what are the 3 most important neuroglial cells
- oligodendrocytes (insulators in the CNS)
- Schwann cells (insulators in the PNS)
- ependymal cells (make CSF and form blood-CSF
what are the 3 types of neuronal junctions
- synapses (neuron to neuron, excitatory or inhibitory, only in grey matter)
- neuromuscular junctions (neurone to muscle, always excitatory)
- neuroglandular junctions (neuron-glandular cells, most secretory glands)
what is afferent nerve
convey information towards the CNS
what is efferent nerve
Convey information away from the CNS
what are the 3 different types of neurons
- unipolar (afferent)
- bipolar (afferent)
- multipolar (efferent)
what is the peripheral nervous system
- nerves outside the protection of the skull and spine
- includes motor, sensory and autonomic sections
- includes cranial nerves except optic nerve (II)
- segmental (even the cranial nerves)
what is the autonomic nervous systm
- part of the PNS supplying efferent (motor) fibres to visceral structures
- control intrinsic rhythms
- sympathetic and parasympathetic
- control centres of the CNS
what response is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system
fight or flight response
what is something that is causd by the parasympathetic nerous system
urination and defecation on comand
