Q

How are skeletal muscles named? (7)

A

shape: ie. deltoid muscle (triangular), rhomboid muscle (diamond)
location: ie. pectoral muscles (in pectoral region), intercostals (between ribs)

attachment site: ie. sternocleidomastoid muscle (attaches to sternum, clavicle, and mastoid process of temporal bone)

number of heads: ie. biceps (2 heads), triceps (3 heads)

function: ie. flexor (for flexion), extensor (for extension)

direction of fibers: ie. rectus abdominis, transversus abdominis

size: ie. vastus lateralis, latissimus dorsi
