Muscular System - Intro Flashcards
What are the 3 main types of tissue?
smooth muscle tissue
cardiac muscle tissue
skeletal muscle tissue
Where is smooth muscle tissue located?
contributes to wall of blood vessels and hollow viscera (ie. stomach, urinary bladder)
What does contraction of smooth muscle tissue cause?
causes relatively regular, but involuntary movement in these viscera
What is the function of each type of muscle tissue regulated by?
smooth muscle tissue: ANS
cardiac muscle tissue: ANS
skeletal muscle tissue: SNS
Where is cardiac muscle tissue located?
found in heart only
Where is skeletal muscle tissue located?
typically attach to bones
What does contraction of cardiac muscle tissue cause?
rhythmic involuntary contraction of heart
What does contraction of skeletal muscle tissue cause?
movements of bones at level of joints
What is the origin of skeletal muscle?
attachment of muscle that remains stationary during muscle contraction
What is the insertion of skeletal muscle?
attachment of muscle that moves during muscle contraction
What is the function (action) of skeletal muscle?
movement caused by muscle contraction – insertion moves towards origin
What is the innervation of skeletal muscle?
SNS (through spinal and cranial nerves) carries motor impulses for skeletal muscle contraction
What are the 4 major characteristics of skeletal muscle?
origin
insertion
function (action)
innervation
How are skeletal muscles named? (7)
shape: ie. deltoid muscle (triangular), rhomboid muscle (diamond)
location: ie. pectoral muscles (in pectoral region), intercostals (between ribs)
attachment site: ie. sternocleidomastoid muscle (attaches to sternum, clavicle, and mastoid process of temporal bone)
number of heads: ie. biceps (2 heads), triceps (3 heads)
function: ie. flexor (for flexion), extensor (for extension)
direction of fibers: ie. rectus abdominis, transversus abdominis
size: ie. vastus lateralis, latissimus dorsi
