Intro to Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous system responsible for?
receiving and processing impulses from the external or internal environments, and initiating an appropriate response
What are the 2 parts of the nervous system (structural)?
central nervous system (CNS)
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What are the 3 parts of the nervous system (functional)?
somatic nervous system
visceral (autonomic) nervous system
enteric nervous system
What do sensory/afferent nerve fibers do?
carry signals towards CNS
What do motor/efferent nerve fibers do?
carry signals away from CNS
Describe the overlap between the structural and functional classifications of the nervous system.
parts of somatic and visceral (autonomic) systems are contained within CNS, and other parts are included in the PNS
What structures does the CNS consist of?
brain and spinal cord
What is the function of the CNS?
integrative and control centres
What structures does the PNS consist of?
cranial nerves and spinal nerves
What is the function of the PNS?
communication lines between CNS and rest of body
What are the 2 divisions of the PNS?
sensory (afferent) division
motor (efferent) division
What structures does the sensory (afferent) division of the PNS consist of?
somatic and visceral sensory nerve fibers
What is the function of the sensory (afferent) division of the PNS?
conducts impulses from receptors to CNS
What structures does the motor (efferent) division of the PNS consist of?
motor nerve fibers
What is the function of the motor (efferent) division of the PNS?
conducts impulses from CNS to effectors (muscles and glands)
What are the 2 parts of the motor (efferent) division of the PNS?
somatic nervous system
autonomic nervous system (ANS)
What structures does the somatic nervous system consist of?
somatic motor (voluntary)
What is the function of the somatic nervous system?
conducts impulses from CNS to skeletal muscles
What structures does the autonomic nervous system consist of?
visceral motor (involuntary)
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
conducts impulses from CNS to cardiac muscles, smooth muscles, and glands
What are the 2 divisions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS)?
sympathetic division
parasympathetic division
What is the function of the sympathetic division of the ANS?
mobilizes body systems during activity
What are the functions of the parasympathetic division of the ANS? (2)
- conserves energy
- promotes housekeeping functions during rest
Where do sensory/afferent nerve fibers carry signals? (3)
from
- sensory (afferent) division of PNS
- skin
- stomach
