occipitofrontalis
- this is also called the epicranius
- this wraps from the frontal bone to the occipital bone
- it has two bellies (frontal and occipital)
- it is typically used for surprise, curiosity facial expressions
frontal belly of occipitofrontalis
this elevates the eyebrows and wrinkles the scalp
occipital belly of occipitofrontalis
this retracts the scalp
epicranial aponeurosis
this is the connection of the two muscle bellies of the occipitofrontalis
corrugator supercilii
this is a muscle of the eye
- this pulls the eyebrows inferiorly and medially
- creates vertical wrinkles above the nose
orbicularis oculi
- this is really large and round above the eye
- the acts to close the eyelids; blinking squinting; draws the eyebrows inferiorly
levator palpebrae superioris
- this acts to elevate the upper eyelid
- this muscle is deep
- this is the only muscle not innervated by the facial nerve
- this is innervated by the oculomotor nerve (cranial nerve 3)
procerus
- this is a muscle of the nose
- it acts to depress medial eyebrows and wrinkles skin over the nose
- this is used to display dislike or distain
nasalis
- this is a muscle of the nose
- it has two parts, a transverse part and an alar part
- compresses the bride and depresses the tip of the nose, elevates corners of the nostrils
- allows for the flaring of nostrils
buccinator
- this is a deep muscle
- it is a muscle of the mouth but it is not a muscle of mastication
- this muscle draws the cheek inward and allows for whistling or sucking; it draws the mouth laterally; holds food in when chewing
levator anguli oris
this acts to widen the oral fissue, elevates the corners of the mouth
- this assists with smiling
levator labii superioris
- this opens lips; elevates and furrows the upper lip
- this is associated with sadness
levator labii superioris alaeque Nasi
this acts to elevate the upper lip and dilates nostrils
- this is making the elvis snarl (raising the upper lip on one side)
zygomaticus major
this acts to raise the lateral corners of the mouth
- this causes smiles
zygomaticus minor
this raises the lateral corners of the mouth
- this causes smiles
depressor anguli oris
this acts to draw the corner of the mouth inferiorly and laterally
- this causes a frown
depressor labii inferioris
this depresses the lower lip
- this causes a frown
orbicularis oris
this closes lips; purses and protrudes lips (kissing or whistling)
- this is the big muscle encircling the mouth
risorius
this draws the corner of the lip laterally and down and tenses the lips
- this causes kind of an inbetween a smile and a frown, more of a flat mouth
mentalis
this elevates and wrinkles skin of the chin, protrudes lower lip
platysma
this tenses skin on the inferior face and neck and depresses the jaw
