What is slipped upper femoral epiphysis?
Head of femur is displaced along growth plate:
posterior-inferior displacement of the epiphysis
What is the common patient in the presentation of SUFE?
Obese child ages 10-12
What condition is associated with SUFE?
Hypothyroidism
When to suspect SUFE from question stem
History of minor trauma triggering onset of symptoms
Pain is disproportionate to severity of injury
Symptoms of SUFE?
Hip, groin, thigh or knee pain
Loss of internal rotation of leg in flexion:
suFI - issue flexed + internal rotation
How to investigate SUFI?
X ray hip pelvis
AP and lateral:
Frog leg view will be diagnostic
Will see the postero-inferior displacement of epiphysis
How to manage sufe?
Surgery:
Internal fixation of femoral head -> return to correct position and fixed to prevent further slippage
Complications of SUFE?
Avascular necrosis of femoral head
