Urticaria
Angioedema

Non IgE mediated allergy symptoms
Erythema
Atopic eczema
Change in stools
food aversion
abdominal pain
Test 1 and test 2 done to investigate allergies?
1st do skin prick test
2nd measure specific IgE antibodies (RAST)
When to refer to specialist?
Faltering growth with a GI symptom
Severe atopic eczema
Multiple allergies
Acute systemic or delayed reaction
How to manage / allergy action plan
Written information/leaflet + adequate training
· Explain what an allergy is
· Explain some children grow out of allergies (i.e. cow’s milk protein)
- Mild attacks à antihistamines (i.e. loratadine)
- Severe attacks à EpiPen (IM adrenaline)
How does cow milk allergy present?
usually presents in first 3m of life in formula-fed children
3 month baby that vomits and has diarrhoea after every feed’

How to manage cow milk allergy
Trial elimination for 2-6 weeks
Consider 1g calcium and 10mcg vitamin D
Replace milk : hypoallergenic infant formula
What is the milk ladder?
Re-evaluate tolerance to cows’ milk protein (every 6-12 months) à re-introduce cows’ milk protein into the diet à if tolerance is established, greater exposure of less processed milk is advised with ‘Milk Ladder’
Herediary angioedema?
C1 esterase deficiency
= recurrent facial swelling and abdo pain
