What is rubella?
Also known as german measles - need to differentiate between rubella and measles

signs and symptoms
Prodrome = mild fever / asymptomatic
- Pink maculopapular rash (face whole body), fades in 3-5 days
- 20% Forchheimer spots (red spots on soft palate)

What are other names for this condition?
Slapped cheek disease

Parvovirus:
Signs and symptoms?
Asymptomatic or coryzal illness for 2-3 days
otherwise:
Erythema infectiosum
- Red slapped cheek rash
progressing to lace like rash on trunk and limbs in a week
Aplastic crisis
Fetal disease via maternal transmission
Parvovirus:
Management
Supportive, stay of school
Will clear in 3 weeks
Avoid pregnant women
- condition less infection when rash appears
Chickenpox:
Signs and symptoms?
fever initially. Itchy rash starting on head/trunk then spreading.
Papular then vesicular then crust over.
Chickenpox:
management supportive:
Paracetamol for fever
Trim nails
Calamine lotion
School exclusion
Chickenpox:
What to avoid?
NSAIDS!
no ibuprofen, can cause secondary infection risk of lesions e.g. nec fasciitis
Chickenpox:
How to manage secondary bacterial infection?
Sudden high fever after imporvement
= IV flucloxacillin + aciclovir
