What is coeliac disease?|
sensitivity to gluten.
Children normally present before the age of 3 years, following the introduction of cereals into the diet.
What deficiency is seen in lactose intolerance?
lactose dehydrogenase
Can occur as a temporary thing secondary to gastroenteritis
Clinical features of coeliac disease?
Failure to thrive (growth) when weaning begins
DIarrhoea
Abdo distension
Dermatitis herpetiformis
What ix for coeliac disease?
Anti TTG antibodies
Anti-endomysial antibodies
- check for IgA deficiency before testing for antibodies
What will be seen on endoscopy and intestinal biopsy?\
Villous atrophy
crypt hyperplasia
What exclusiosn need to be made before coeliac is confirmed?
Exclude gastroenteritis (stool sample) and crohn’s (faecal calprotectin).
How to manage coeliac disease?
- Gluten Free Diet → avoid wheat, rye and barley.
- Annual Review → check height, weight, and BMI.
Review symptoms and adherance to diet.
What complications can occur in a child with coeliac disease?
vitamin deficiency, anaemia, osteoporosis, EATL.
