morphine sulfate Flashcards
morphine sulfate (class 2)
narcotic analgesic
CNS depressant
morphine sulfate (actions 4)
CNS depression - binds to opiate receptors in the brain
decreases pain perception and anxiety
relaxes respiratory effort
produces peripheral vasodilation and subsequent reduced preload
morphine sulfate (indications 4)
chest pain of suspected cardiac origin (for pain & anxiety relief) if nitro ineffective
moverate to severe pain (burns or isolated extremety trauma)
abdominal pain (non traumatic), suspected kidney stones
discomfort seconary to transcutaneous pacing in the awake pt
morphine sulfate (dosage/route)
2-20mg in 2mg increpents slow IVP; titrated to pain relief & respiratory response
morphine sulfate (side effects 4)
respiratory deppresion and/or arrest
decreased LOC
transient hypotension
nausea/vomiting (stimulation of comiting center)
morphine sulfate (contraindications 6)
known hypersensitivity
volume depletion
suspected ectopic pregnancy, abruptio placenta or AAA)
unstable VS
head injury
MAOI within 14 days
morphine sulfate (special information 6)
monitor BP, pulse, and RR between increments
utilize caution for pt with COPD, asthma, compromised respirations, & the elderly
consider utilazation of naloxone if pt demonstrates respiratory arrest or hypotension post administration. naloxone may not reverse hypotension
assess effectiveness of administration with reassessment of pain & respiratory status of pt
anticipate vomiting
goal is pt comfort not elimination of pain
morphine sulfate (pedatric note 2)
refer to pediatric drug guide
0.1-0.2 mg/kg slow ivp to a max of 5mg
