Ketamine (Class)
non-barbituate/analgesic
Ketamine (MOA 3)
rapid acting analgesic characterized by profound analgesia and amnesia
reatins normal protective airway reflexes & spontaneous respirations
stimulates beta 2 adrenergic receptors causing bronchodilation
Ketamine (indications 3)
pre-induction agent for RSI
conscious sedation
general analgesia
Ketamine (dosage/route)
for RSI: 2mg/kg IV/IO
for sedation/analgesia: 1mg/kg IV/IO over 30-60 sec
4-5mg/kg IM. may repeat with 2-5mg/kg in 5-10 minutes
Ketamine (side effects 6)
transient laryngospasm
hypertension
increased cardiac output & myocardial O2 consumption
may increase ICP and CPP
disassociative anesthesia/hallucinations
nausea/vomiting
Ketamine (contraindications 6)
known hypersensitivity
known pregnancy
coronary artery disease
infants under 3 mos
glaucoma or acute globe injury
known or suspected schizophrenia
Ketamine (special information 3)
requires midazolam after intubation
administration of antiemetic may reduce incidence of vomiting
monitor patient closely for laryngospasm or apnea
