ipratropium (class)
anticholinergic bronchodilator
ipratropium (actions 2)
inhibits vagally mediated reflexes by antagonizing muscarinic ACH receptors in the lungs
weak bronchodilator with no anti-inflammatory efects
ipratropium (indications)
as a supplement to beta agonists (albuterol) in asthma and copd
ipratropium (dosage/route)
- 5mg in 2.5ml NS via neb
0. 5mg mixed in albuterol via neb as 2nd or 3rd neb treatment
ipratropium (side effects 2)
dry mouth, cough & throat
increased intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients
ipratropium (contraindications 2)
known hypersentsitivity
do not use in patients with severe glaucoma
ipratropium (special information 6)
simultaneous adminstration of atrovent and albuterol produces greater bronchodilation than either drug used alone
use with caution with hx of allergies to soybeans or peanuts (give only in neb , nor mdi
o2 should be used at 6liters minimum
can use aerosol mask
must be stored in foil container (sensitive to light
re-evaluate patient, including lung sounds, respiratory rate, & o2 sat to determine effectiveness
ipratropium (pediatric note 3)

peds <2yrs give 0.25mg dose
peds >2yrs give 0.25-0.5mg dose
