Etomidate (class)
sedative/hypnotic
Etomidate (MOA)
rapid induction of anesthesia with minimal respiratory & cardiovascular effects
does not cause histamine release like other sedatives/hypnotics
Etomidate (indications)
induction agent prior to paralytic in RSI
Etomidate (dosage/route)
0.3mg/kg IVP (over 10 sec.) to a max of 20mg
may be repeated in 8-10 minutes
Etomidate (side effects)
myoclonic skeletal muscle movement
hypotension
nausea & vomiting
apnea
Etomidate (contraindications)
patients with known hypersensitivity
Etomidate (special information)
may cause transient venous pain on injection
use with caution in patients with marked hypotension, severe asthma, or severe cardiovascular disease
Verapamil may interact to cause proloned respiratory depression & apnea
onset of action is 10-20 seconds & lasts 10 minutes
rapid injection can lead to hypotension
