narcotic analgesic
CNS depressant
fentanyl (actions 2)
CNS depression - binds to opiate receptor sites
alters the respons to and perception of pain
fentanyl (indications 2)
sedation prior to intubation
moverate to severe pain (chest pain, burns, isolated extremety trauma)
fentanyl (dosage/route 2)
25-100MCG slow IVP over 2-3 min
may repeat in 5-10 minutes prn to a max of 200mcg
fentanyl (side effects 5)
decreased LOC
paradoxical excitation
respiratory depression and/or arrest
arrhythmias, bradycardia, hypotension
nausea/vomiting
fentanyl (contraindications 3)
known hypersensitivity
MAO inhibitors within 14 days
Myasthenia Gravis
fentanyl (special information 7)
may produce severe or fatal reactions when given to patients on MAOIs
additive CNS depression with alcohol, antidepressants, antihistamines, or sedatives/hypnotics
monitor vital signs and ECG continuously
Naloxone will reverse overdose effects
assess effectiveness of administration with reassessment of pain, respiratory status and sedative effects
use with caution in pts with head trauma, increased ICP, undiagnosed abdominal pain, elderly, debilitated
reduce dosage for pts with COPD, respiratory problems or hepatic/renal insufficiency
