Modes of Transmission Flashcards
What are the 2 modes of transmission?
- Direct.
- Indirect.
What are the 3 forms of direct contact?
- Direct contact.
- Close contact.
- Reservoir.
What is direct contact?
Transmission is due to physical touch between an infected host and a susceptible host via skin or body fluids.
What is close contact?
Transmission of pathogens in airborne droplets between an infected host and susceptible host such as sneezing or coughing.
What is a reservoir?
Transmission from an inanimate reservoir to a susceptible host. A reservoir could be soil.
What are the 3 forms of indirect transmission?
- Vector.
- Airbourne droplets.
- Soilbourne/waterbourne.
What is a vector?
A living thing that transmits a pathogen from an infected host to a susceptible host.
What are airborne droplets?
Pathogens that can be transmitted inside airborne droplets that are sneezed or coughed into the air and are suspended for a period of time before being inhaled.
What are soilborne and waterborne?
An inanimate object acts as an intermediary between the portal of exit from the reservoir and the portal of entry to the host.
