Meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
what is meiosis
A
meiosis is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original genetic information. It is a nuclear and cellular division for producing gametes.
2
Q
four differences between meiosis and mitosis
A
- in meiosis a parent cell divides twice
- four daughter cells are produced in meiosis (not two)
- In meiosis chromosomes number is halved (diploid to haploid)
- daughter cells produced in meiosis are not genetically identical
3
Q
how many phases are there in meiosis
A
eight
4
Q
what are the phases of meiosis
A
- prophase 1
- metaphase 1
- anaphase 1
- telophase 1
- prophase 2
- metaphase 2
- anaphase 2
- telophase 2
5
Q
during the second phase of division (meiosis) what occurs differently
A
the chromosomes during metaphase line up perpendicularly at a 90 degree angle
6
Q
significant features of meiosis
A
- 2 successive divisions
- first division separates homologous chromosomes into separate cells
- second division separates chromatids into separate cells
- four haploid daughter cells
- each having half the number of chromosomes of parent
