Define infectious diseases.
Are caused by a pathogen and can be passed from one organism to another. They can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and protists.
Define host.
An organism that is infected by a pathogen.
Define infectious agent.
A disease-causing agent that can be transmitted from one organism to another.
Define infection.
The invasion of a host by a pathogen, where it establishes itself and replicates.
Define transmission.
Transport of a pathogen from an infected host or a reservoir to a susceptible host.
Define virulence.
A measure of the ability of a pathogen to cause severe disease within its host.

What are zoonotic diseases?
These are infectious diseases that can be transmitted from one vertebrae group to another.
What is an example of zoonotic disease?
Humans can be infected with an avian bird or swine pig with the influenza virus. Transmission is primarily through direct contact with infected animals.
What is an outbreak?
Is a sudden increase in the prevalence of a disease above the baseline level for that population.
What is an example of an outbreak?
The COVID-19 pandemic was first identified in China and quickly spread around the world.
